Spicy Shrimp and Avocado Masala

We had some delicious Indian food in London that inspired me to get out my garam masala and spice things up in my home kitchen.  If you’re new to South Asian cooking, masala simply means a mixture of spices.  Masalas can be a combination of dried spices, or a paste of spices and other ingredients like garlic, ginger, onions and chili.

The masala in this dish adds spice, flavor and you can find it in your grocery store.  I also added an avocado, veggies and some cream cheese to cut the heat from the spices and jalapenos.  Serve over rice, with naan or just spoon it from a bowl like we did.

What to buy (serves 2-3):

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 tablespoons ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium size tomato, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 8-10 asparagus stalks, chopped
  • 1 avocado, pureed
  • 1 jalapeño, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese

What to do:

  • heat oil, onions, red pepper and asparagus in a stockpot over medium heat until onions are golden, about 15-20 minutes
  • add ginger, garlic, jalapenos, avocado, tomato, garam masala, and chili powder, and stir until well mixed
  • add broth and shrimp, cook until shrimp are opaque and cooked through, about 4 minutes
  • remove from heat and stir in cream cheese
  • season with salt and pepper to taste
